Japanese authorities have to deal with the sudden appearance of a gigantic monster that has mutated from nuclear bomb testing. Ishirō Honda directed and co-wrote this Toho production, the very first film of the Godzilla franchise, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. The film pioneered “suitmation”, in which a stunt performer in a monster suit moves among miniature sets; Haruo Nakajima was one of the performers inside Godzilla. In 1956 a heavily re-edited American version, Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, reached the United States. Guinness World Records has recognised the franchise that started here as the longest-running film franchise in history.
