A miniseries is one story with a known number of episodes and a real ending. It isn’t stretched into new seasons “just in case,” so you can start on a Friday evening and finish on Sunday with the feeling that the story is complete. Here we’ve gathered seven projects that have already aired. All facts come from Wikipedia pages checked on October 14, 2026, and the running times in hours are our own calculations based on the episode length ranges listed on those pages.
The series are arranged from shortest to longest, so you can quickly estimate how much free time you have.
Adolescence
Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, directed by Philip Barantini. The series premiered on March 13, 2025. The plot follows 13-year-old schoolboy Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of a girl from his school. A distinctive feature of the format: according to Wikipedia, each episode is shot in one continuous take. Episodes run from 51 to 65 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours, that is, one long evening.
Chernobyl
Written and created by Craig Mazin, directed by Johan Renck. The premiere in the United States took place on May 6, 2019. It is a dramatization rather than a documentary: the series tells the story of the nuclear power plant accident in April 1986 and of the people who were involved in it and worked to contain its consequences. According to Wikipedia, the miniseries won the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries (along with awards for directing and writing), a Golden Globe and a 2020 BAFTA TV Award. Episodes run from 59 to 71 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 5 to 6 hours.
The Queen’s Gambit
Created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott; directed by Scott Frank. It premiered on October 23, 2020. It is based on Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel. The heroine, Beth Harmon, is a fictional American chess prodigy who rises to the top of the chess world while battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol. Episodes run from 46 to 67 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 5.5 to 8 hours.
Mare of Easttown
Created by Brad Ingelsby, directed by Craig Zobel. It aired from April 18 to May 30, 2021. A detective in a fictional suburb of Pennsylvania investigates the murder of a young mother, while the heroine’s own life falls apart. The lead role is played by Kate Winslet. Episodes run from 58 to 66 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 7 to 8 hours.
Sharp Objects
The series is based on Gillian Flynn’s 2006 debut novel. The showrunner is Marti Noxon, the director is Jean-Marc Vallée, and the premiere took place on July 8, 2018. Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) is a crime reporter who recently left a psychiatric hospital. She returns to her hometown of Wind Gap in Missouri to cover the murders of two girls and is forced to face her mother and her own demons. Episodes run from 55 to 61 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 7.5 to 8 hours.
Maid
The series is based on Stephanie Land’s memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive.” The creator is Molly Smith Metzler; it premiered on October 1, 2021, with Margaret Qualley in the lead role. A young mother leaves an abusive partner, moves with her little daughter into a shelter and takes a job as a cleaner, trying to build a future for herself as a writer. Episodes run from 47 to 60 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 8 to 10 hours.
Band of Brothers
The series is based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 nonfiction book; the executive producers were Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It aired from September 9 to November 4, 2001. The miniseries follows Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division, from paratrooper training through World War II to the occupation of Berchtesgaden. Episodes run from 49 to 70 minutes.
Time needed: roughly 8 to 11.5 hours: this is the longest option on the list.
How much time each series takes
Rough estimates: we multiply the number of episodes by the minimum and maximum episode length from the Wikipedia pages.

How to plan a weekend
For a single evening, Adolescence is enough. For Saturday, Chernobyl or The Queen’s Gambit will do. If you want to stretch the viewing over two days, take Mare of Easttown, Sharp Objects or Maid. It’s best to leave Band of Brothers for a long weekend.
About heavy themes. Adolescence deals with murder and school; The Queen’s Gambit and Sharp Objects feature heroines with addictions or mental health problems; in Maid the heroine escapes an abusive relationship; and Chernobyl depicts a real disaster. If a heavy theme isn’t right for you now, choose another series from the list.
These stories are built on mysteries and twists, so before watching it helps to read our tips on avoiding spoilers. And if you prefer a new story starting each time, watch anthology series.
Frequently asked questions
How is a miniseries different from a regular series?
A miniseries is designed as one story with a beginning and an end, while a regular series usually develops season by season. A miniseries has fewer episodes, and its events are not stretched out “for the future.”
Do I need to read the book to understand the series?
No. The Queen’s Gambit, Sharp Objects, Maid and Band of Brothers are based on books, but they tell their stories from beginning to end on their own. You can read the books after watching if the series appeals to you.
Can I stretch the viewing over a week?
Yes, miniseries handle that well. One caveat: in detective stories it’s easier to watch the episodes closer together so you don’t lose the thread of the investigation.
Where can I watch these miniseries?
Service catalogs change constantly, so we don’t say where each series is streaming. For which streaming services work in Ukraine, see a separate article, and check whether a particular title is available on the service’s own page.
