What to know
In late 2009 3 Arts Entertainment bought the rights to the light novel All You Need Is Kill and sold the spec script to Warner Bros., which made the film with Village Roadshow. Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth wrote the screenplay. The film first carried the title of the book, but Warner Bros. renamed it as filming ended, and the tagline “Live. Die. Repeat.” was later put front and centre on the home release.
Principal photography began on 1 October 2012 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden near London. The beach for the landing battle was built inside the studio and surrounded by green screens, and the visual effects artists extended it with plates shot at Saunton Sands in Devon. On 24 November 2012 the crew filmed in London’s Trafalgar Square, which was closed to the public. The film was shot on 35 mm film to evoke Second World War footage, and Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt wore the battle suits themselves, which weighed 39 kg on average.
It was released in some territories on 30 May 2014 and in the United States on 6 June; the Ukrainian dub was made by the Postmodern studio. A sequel with the working title Live Die Repeat and Repeat has been discussed since 2015, but it has no official release date.
