Japanese politicians struggle with bureaucratic red tape as they try to deal with the sudden appearance of an ever-evolving monster named Godzilla. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi directed the film, with a screenplay by Anno and visual effects by Higuchi; Toho Pictures and Cine Bazar produced it and Toho distributed it. It is the 31st film of the Godzilla franchise, Toho's third reboot of it and the first film of the Reiwa era. The inspiration came from the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan. At the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize it won seven awards, including Picture of the Year and Director of the Year.
