About thirty years after the original film Godzilla returns to the screen, and unlike in the last Shōwa films he is a villain here. Koji Hashimoto directed the film, with special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano; Toho distributed it and its subsidiary Toho Pictures produced it. The 16th film of the franchise, it is a sequel to Godzilla (1954) and a reboot that ignores the events of all the later films. Though made in Japan's Shōwa era, it officially opens the Heisei series. Ken Tanaka, Yasuko Sawaguchi, Yosuke Natsuki and Keiju Kobayashi star. It was the second Japanese film to use computer-generated imagery.
