What to know
The sequel to Godzilla (2014) was greenlit during the first film’s opening weekend, with Gareth Edwards expected to direct a trilogy, but he left the project in May 2016. In October 2016 Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields were hired to rewrite the script, and in January 2017 Dougherty was announced as director. It is the 35th film in the Godzilla franchise, and in Japan it was distributed by Toho itself.
Filming ran from June 19 to September 27, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia, under the working title “Fathom”, and parts were shot in the Historic Center of Mexico City on August 19–22. Composer Bear McCreary wove in Akira Ifukube’s classic Godzilla theme and Yūji Koseki’s “Mothra’s Song”. The film is dedicated to executive producer Yoshimitsu Banno and Haruo Nakajima, the original Godzilla suit performer, both of whom died in 2017. In Ukraine it opened on May 30, 2019, a day before the United States.
