What to know
After the box office and streaming success of Godzilla vs. Kong, Legendary announced a sequel in March 2022. Adam Wingard returned as director and co-writer of the story, Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay, and Dan Stevens, who had worked with Wingard on The Guest, joined as a lead. It is the 38th film in the Godzilla franchise and the 13th in the King Kong franchise. Tom Holkenborg and Antonio Di Iorio composed the score.
Filming began on July 29, 2022, on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, and finished in November. A separate visual effects unit shot background plates in Rio de Janeiro and gathered data for a digital recreation of the city, while Surfers Paradise stood in for the beach in Rio. The film premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on March 25, 2024, and opened in Ukraine on March 28. It became the highest-grossing film of the Monsterverse and of both the Godzilla and King Kong franchises.
